Learners of English, especially, need a dictionary based on analysis of the kind of language they need to read and write themselves. For students of English for academic purposes (EAP), that means academic language.

How to use a learner's dictionary of academic English? A good dictionary can be an invaluable tool for the independent learner. Its unique virtue is that it can answer your specific vocabulary question on demand. But there are two important things to bear in mind: first, it needs to be the right dictionary for your needs; second, you need to be aware of all the different types of information it contains and how to make the best use of it all.

What it means to ‘know’ a word and how a learner's dictionary helps? A good dictionary is not just a list of isolated words with their meanings or translations. Indeed, it can be argued that a word in isolation has no definite meaning: the meaning only becomes apparent when the word is placed in context. The job of the dictionary is to place a word in each of its possible contexts and explain its meaning in each case. In order to do this successfully, the dictionary needs to be based on the analysis of words in real texts and communication.

یادگیرندگان زبان انگلیسی، به‌ویژه نیازمند یک دیکشنری بر اساس تحلیلی از نوع زبانی که باید خودشان بخوانند و بنویسند، هستند. برای دانشجویان زبان انگلیسی جهت اهداف دانشگاهی (EAP) آن (زبان) به‌معنای زبان دانشگاهی است.

چگونه از دیکشنری یادگیرندهٔ انگلیسی دانشگاهی استفاده کنیم؟ یک دیکشنری خوب می‌تواند ابزاری بسیار ارزشمند برای یادگیرندهٔ مستقل {که بدون کلاس زبان را می‌آموزد} باشد. مزیت منحصر به فرد آن این است که می‌تواند پرسش‌های واژگانی مخصوص شما را به محض نیاز پاسخ دهد. ولی دو چیز مهم وجود دارد که باید در ذهن داشته باشید: نخست {اینکه} باید دیکشنری درستی برای نیازهای شما باشد؛ دوم {آنکه} باید از تمام انواع مختلف اطلاعاتی که در بر دارد و {اینکه} چگونه بهترین استفاده را از آن ببرید، آگاه باشید.
